Hands-On Experimental Advanced Learning

HEAL is SIG's practical skills series. More than 10 recorded workshops have covered suturing, casting, bowel anastomosis, robotic surgery, neurosurgery and laparoscopic skills, with qualified instructors leading each session in an appropriate training setting.

Research Program

SURE Research Program

SURE connects students with surgeons and researchers for supervised work on surgical research projects. SIG's approved portfolio records more than 120 ongoing projects and more than 200 student participants in the program.

SIG Journal Clubs

Each SIG Journal Club brings four to five student presenters together with expert mentors to examine surgical literature. Eight documented sessions over two years have covered Breast & Endocrine, Pediatric, Vascular, Cardiac, General, Thoracic and Surgical Oncology topics.

SurgInsights uses clinical cases to discuss surgical conditions, assessment and decision-making. Students lead the session, while invited specialists add practical context and draw out the main learning points.

SURGE Mentorship Program

Surgical Undergraduate Residency Guidance & Education Program

SURGE – Surgical Undergraduate Residency Guidance & Education Program is the Surgery Interest Group’s structured mentorship initiative, designed to support medical students at different stages of their surgical journey. Through mentorship, career guidance, and access to relevant opportunities, SURGE helps students explore surgery, strengthen their academic and professional development, and prepare for future residency pathways. The program offers three mentorship tracks: Saudi General Surgery Track For students preparing to pursue General Surgery residency in Saudi Arabia, with focused guidance on residency preparation, research, CV development, electives, interviews, and career planning. U.S. Surgery Track For students interested in pursuing surgical residency training in the United States, with guidance on USMLE planning, clinical experiences, research, applications, networking, and the U.S. residency pathway. General Surgical Mentorship Track For students who are exploring surgery or seeking broader guidance on surgical specialties, research opportunities, clinical exposure, CV development, and career planning. The Saudi and U.S. specialized tracks are limited to a selected number of mentees and operate on a competitive application basis, allowing for more focused and individualized mentorship. Whether you are beginning to explore surgery or actively preparing for residency, SURGE provides a supportive environment to help you plan your next steps and grow throughout your surgical journey.
